A Tale of Two Halves

The final game of the season between the last two undefeated teams from the UNLV Rebels and ISU Cyclones was nothing short of breath-taking and a true instant classic. The long awaited meeting between these two coaches, who have had a track record of facing each other for big games did not disappoint. And although it was a regular season game and some deemed it insignificant, it was not so apparent as you watched the game. Both teams looked like they had something to prove.

Before the game the coaches were asked about the significance of this game and what they felt they had to do in order to secure not only victory but also home field advantage throughout the playoffs:

G: This is just another game for us and we try approach every game w/ the same intensity and not fall for the emotional ups and downs of the season. I would be lying if i said that we didn't care about this game, securing home field throughout would be a big boost. No one really wants to play away, especially during the playoffs.

Mo: WE NEED TO WIN THIS GAME!!!

Taste of What's To Come

Las Vegas, Nevada - Two coaches with a strong past. Their coaching rivalry stretches across two BCS conferences, winning championships in at least one of them. Through times, their jobs led them to different paths, one going to perinial power SEC, the other, building a noted basketball school UNLV to a football landmark.
Coach Mo and Coach G has battled on the gridiron for close to 9 years, each finding high and low times during gameday. And again, they match up, this time in what could possibly be the prelude this year's VCFL Championships. We sit down with Coach JMo at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino to discuss the rivalry and the upcoming game.

Jim Lampley: What kind of relationship do you have with Coach G?
Coach Mo: "We've definitely had our share of good games. He's a good friend of mine off the field. He was actually over the house for babinka the other night. That's a Filipino desert Jim if you didn't know. [laugh]."

Jim Lampley: Would you consider the ACC years to be your best coaching era?
Coach Mo: "Taking Duke to 2 National Champioships was definitely a great time for me. Coach G wasn't really a factor in the ACC. Coach Bigs made more of a mark then. He was still winning games, but retired coach Kim would always take him out of contention. But sometimes, it's not the wins you remember, but the loses you come across."

Jim Lampley: You mean your PAC-10 years?
Coach Mo: "Those were tough years. Expectations were high that first year, but I'll tell you what. I never cut strawberries for dessert during gameday anymore Jim. No more. From then on things went down hill with Washington State's program. And Coach G's Arizona U's program saw the window to grow."

Jim Lampley: He pratically owned you and the PAC-10 once he recruited RB Manning and LB Huff, correct?
Coach Mo: "You know what Jim, don't take that tone with me or I'll slap the HBO Fight Night contract right out of you. Coach G recruited well, both offensively and deffensively. I didn't win a game against him after the 1st year."

Jim Lampley: So what do you feel is different this time around?
Coach Mo: "We've had scrimmidge game a few years back, and we managed to get a win, but he was coming out of retirement then, and I know he's caught up with the program. But this time around, I have a good bunch of kids, and the spread offense we run is more a combo of my past few teams I've coached. That, and I don't slice fruit during gameday Jim. No more."

Jim Lampley: Do you have anything else to say to Iowa St?
Coach Mo: "Not really. I wouldn't hype up this last regular season game. Our goals' to win, but come playoff time, it's a whole new season. Ole Miss is always a sleeping giant, and the (Warriors) can spark an upset anytime now. Some, and I mean 1 person from Iowa, may disagree, but I still think this is an open championship."

The Road To The Battle for No. 1

At midfield, Coach Bigs and G shared warm greetings after a 4 year hiatus while the teams ran through their pre-game warm-ups during last night's much anticipated and talked about game between the ASU Indians and ISU Cyclones.

Bigs commented before that game, '...this is a must win, going w/o a win this season would be very to hard to live w/ and my kids have been looking forward to playing against one of the top teams in this league..' When asked about the pending investigation about the alleged sandbagging incident by Coach G, Bigs had this to say, '...i've had the privilege to play in another NCAA league w/ coach Mo and G and i just can't see either of them doing something like that....'

The game turned out to be a smash mouth, grind-in-out, boys need not apply, type of football game. ISU scored the first TD in the 1st quarter and were marching down the field again looking to put a strangle-hold on the game but ASU defense tightened up and was able to disrupt an option play and force a fumble but were only able to convert the TO into 3pts. Iowa went into the locker room w/ a 10 - 3 lead,

Bigs: We're still in it. We just have to do a better job at stopping the run and making take advantage of any TO's and we'll be fine.
G: Their defense was solid so, we'll have to make some adjustments and hopefully we can execute on the field.

The second half was not much different from the first half, both teams exchanged blows and although Arkansas was able to keep Iowa out of the end zone, the Arkansas offense struggled against the much improved secondary of Iowa. Iowa's offense had been a potent weapon for this season but their defense came up big in this game. The final score Arkansas 3 - Iowa 16

Bigs: Playoffs!? Playoffs!? We couldn't even win a game and you dare ask me about PLAYOFFS!?? I knew some of you guys couldn't write but at least you should be able to do math. We'll see you guys next year, no more questions.
G: They hung in there tough and like i said before, their defense was solid throughout the game. Our offense wasn't there but i'm glad that the defense and special teams stepped up get this win. As you can see, you can't be one dimensional in this league.

After the game, Coach G received a call from Haw Coach....'yo, man...why didn't you run up the score like you did against us? SANDBAGGER!!! If i were you i'd lose my next game so you don't have to face me in the first round of the playoffs!!!

Coach G responded by shutting off his xbox.

NEWS BREAK: Coach JP makes bold sandbagging allegation

Manoa, Hawaii - Hawaii University Coach JP had a press conference immediately after practice when word came out that the Warriors may rely on Iowa St's game against Arkansas St. ESPN ran a story on playoff possibilities in the early edition of ESPN which was the catalyst to Coach JP's actions. Hawaii, with no hesitation, accused tomfoolery on Coach G and their methods of playoff selection. "(allan) has lost on purpose to keep me out of the hockey playoffs, so I wouldn't put it past him to do it again to me.....".

These allegations of tanking games is under investigation by VCFL officials. No comments were taken from Iowa St Coach G at this time and Iowa St Atheletic Diretor does not want to comment until he has spoken to Coach G in person.

Prior to coaching their respective college teams, Coach JP was head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Coach G was head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, ultimately winning the Championships. In the innaugural VHL regular season, the Blue Jackets were on the bubble, however a loss by the Leafs against Canadian rival Vancuver, on their last game, closed the playoff doors to Coach JP and his Blue Jackets.

Sergie Federov, former FWD for Coach JP, now playing along side Ovechkin in Washington, said "It was controversial. I do not understand what really happen, but it was upsetting after a tough season if that really was true, no."

Standings - Refreshed

The standings have been updated. See below.

Nike Endorses Coach Tapan and the Rebels

In a landmark endorsement deal, Coach Tapan inked a $60 million deal with Nike this morning from his office at Univeristy, MS.

"Today we forge a great partnership between a winning Coach like myself and the leader in athletic apparel, Nike. With that said, I forfeit my salary from Mississippi University and will work for free. Why the hell not? I love the pigskin and teaching young men to play! I can live off the swoosh anyway."

"All the greats have emblazoned the swoosh - Jordan, Tiger, Lance and now Coach Tapan. Who wouldn't want to play for me? I'ma have my own shoe, the Air SMACK THAT ASS!"

Prototypes of Coach Tapan's shoes

"I rep the Philippines to the fullest and so will these Southern Hicks!"

3 in a Row for the Rainbows!

In a record series of events, Coach John led the Warriors on the field of battle three times last night. The first two games proved no match for his opponents as Coach G and Coach T beat up on the Aloha boys. In order to redeem his pride and sleep at night, Coach John challenged the Indians and earned a W.

Linda Cohn and Coach G.

ESPN Update w/ Linda Cohn:

Photobucket

Linda Cohn: Good afternoon coach...

Coach G: ...Linda, please call me Al...(wink, wink)

LC: (smiles) okay, Al. I have to ask this question....'Will ISU be the final stop in this week long college tour for coaching vacancies?"

CG:HAHAHA, no doubt...let me explain something, my lolo (that's grandfather for coach pineda) once told me that sometimes in order to find yourself, you've got to lose yourself. And i never knew what that meant until this past week. Iowa State allowed me to find myself and i can honestly say that i will give them everything that i have.

LC: What really happened in Hawaii b/c you were groomed by June Jones to take over the Hawaii program?

CG: (snickers)...*cough*....excuse me. Yes, well, i learned a lot from Coach Jones but there were just some things that i felt i didn't have to experience in order to learn. And i'd like to go on record that i never started those rumors about the Rainbow Warriors....i think this pic speaks for itself...

Don Ho and Elvis---two of most famous Rainbow Warrior alumns

LC: Wow!! That does speak volumes.

CG: Imagine my surprise.

LC: Finally, what's your take on Coach Bigs latest announcement about going to Arkansas to run that program?

CG: I didn't even know that Arkansas State had a football program but i wish Bigs nothing but the best, we've cross paths before back in 2003-2004, that was then and i'm sure he's a different coach now. What it really comes down to is this,...I said it last night to Coach T and i'll say it again. The only team that i'm really worried about is UNLV, Coach Molina and I have some unfinished business and i'm glad that we have to opportunity to settle it. I think everyone one in this league has something to prove. I still feel that the championship will have to go through us.

LC: That's quite a bold statement, don't you think?

CG: Hey, someone has to win. Why not not us? So, let's get this season started b/c i've got something for each one of these guys.....

ESPN: SportsCenter Rundown on 12PM ET--- w/ Linda Cohn

Linda Cohn sits down w/ Coach G to respond to latest allegations of:
--the use of PMS'S(Pre-Meditated System Shutdowns) to avoid losses during online gaming
--what really goes on in the so called lei'ed state
--his take on the latest announcements from coach bigs

all here at the top of the hour.....

Broke = No Joke

"A few coaches in this league actually spread the rumor
that his x-box is actually not a refurb and that he just shuts down when
his team is losing late in the game. I wouldn't put it past Coach

RIVALS TRAINING CAMP PREVIEW - HAWAII RAINBOW WARRIORS

This week Rivals.com travels to beautiful Oahu to get a sneak peek at
the football program at the University Of Hawaii at Manoa. The Rainbow
Warriors are currently 1-1 in preseason. They lost a close game to the
Cyclones on a Hail Mary in the closing seconds and beat the Rebels of
Ole Miss 17-14. We had a little Q and A with the controversial Head
Football Coach of the University of Hawaii, Coach Pineda.

RIVALS:
How have you played in your 2 preseason games thus far?

PINEDA:
Our defense played really well in both games. We are just trying to
improve each week. We know these preseason games don't mean much but it
will help us in our preparation.

RIVALS:
Comments on Arkansas's State's recent signing of Coach Bigornia to a
multi year contract?

PINEDA:
Man I dunno what the hell he thinking. I didn't even know Indians played
football. If this were cricket, he would dominate year. But it's not
and that's all I have to say about that.

RIVALS:
Coach Guimbaolibot is making his return to the NCAA's this year after a
long break away from the game. How do you feel he will fare this year?

PINEDA:
That guy can't even decide which team he wants to coach. Do you really
want to play for a coach that will probably leave after one year, heck
maybe after one game. I've known Allan for a long time now. He tries
to deceive you with a different play book and different looks or
formations but he doesn't fool me. A good game for him is if his x-box
doesn't crash. A few coaches in this league actually spread the rumor
that his x-box is actually not a refurb and that he just shuts down when
his team is losing late in the game. I wouldn't put it past Coach
Guimbaolibot.

RIVALS:
Seems like Coach Molina has got your number in recent years. Any
comments on him.

PINEDA:
Molina is a smart player. He tries to deceive you with all his audibles
and motions. We have to be at the top of our game when we play them.
Let's just say that date with UNLV is definitely circled on our
calendar.

RIVALS:
I hear you and Coach Tapan are so close, people have seen you 2 playing
on the golf course.

PINEDA:
Yeah, we play golf when we get the chance. Golf is sort of our outlet
to get away from the college football scene. We both love golf but as
far as college football goes I have no comments on Coach Tapan.

Late Breaking News:
Terrell Pryor from Jeannette, PA has made a surprise announcement that
the University of Hawaii at Manoa may now be a leading candidate to
attend next year. Pryor is regarded as the best football prospect in
this years class and Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Oregon were
thought to be high on his list. Pryor will visit Oahu this weekend and
Coach Pineda stated, "we will definitely make sure Terrell gets lei'd
everyday that he is here. It is the Hawaii way. Aloha!"

ESPN News: Coach Bigs Goes to Arkansas State

After a many conference calls with Rutgers, San Diego State and even a couple of SUNY colleges, it has come to a long conclusion that Coach Bigornia has taken a coaching contract with the Arkansas "State" Indians. Coach Bigs, for short, has decided to take this small school in the bible belt, I mean sun belt, and make them a power house in the south. It has been noted by Coach Bigs, that the other coaches should be aware that there will not be any "Southern Comfort" here at Arkansas State.

Bill Parcells of the VCFL

And the beat goes on for coach Allan G., in yet another unprecedented move, Allan was wooed away from the Univ. of Minn for Iowa State Univ!!!!!

When asked by VHL columnist, Chloe Smith....Coach G. had this to say, "Shut up bitch!! I don't have to explain anything, especially, when the Cyclones decided to double my salary and something that has never been offered to an NCAA coach, a 'no termination clause'. Besides, i'm the best thing to happen to this university....and to think about it, the best thing to ever happen to this state. But i won't hold it against you, b/c you're cute....meet me in my office after this news conference so i can give you a 1-on-1 exclusive and i'll make you my bitch!! No more questions!'

Just like old times...

It was late Sunday afternoon, and Coach Tapan decides to check his cellphone. On it he finds the envelope icon. He opens the message. It reads:

"Coach G. W-1, L-0.
Who's next?"

Always welcome to a challenge, Coach T decides to reply with an IM:

"Wanna be 1-1?"

And so it began. Iowa State vs. Ole Miss.

The pictures say it all:

The Infamous Mud Bowl

To kick off the VCFL, here's a pic that oughta wet your appetites. Remember the "Mud Bowl"? Nduka, Allan and Kevin bathing in a pool of sewer flooded mud.

Don't worry, I don't use those couches any more...lol. Viva La Mud Bowl!

VCFL Starts its Inaugural Year

The first annual Virtual College Football League will begin in a few weeks, and already there's been more drama for your momma. With coaches making surprise signings in Mississippi, bi-sexual allegations in Hawaii, and coaching confusion in Arizona, this league may be the next money making product since XFL.
Let's begin with Hawaii and newly signed Coach JP. With 2 years coaching experience in Akron Zips, JP decided to check under the grass skirts of Hawaii's football program with Heisman QB Colt Brennan leading the helm. His 4 year, undisclosed contract was enough to take the trip to Manoa and implement his 5 WR spread offense. When asked what he looks forward to this season, Coach JP responded, "I can't wait to get lei'd before and after the games. WAC represent!"

Moving East, in what has been considered one of college football's most controversial moves, Coach G has now signed with the Golden Gophers of Minnesota, representing the Big 10. After his press conference on ESPN with then AD of Arizona University and releasing his intent to sign as a 3 year coach with the Wildcats, not even 20 minutes later, he appears on ESPN2 and signs a $32 million dollar contract with Minnesota University. When questioned in his 2nd press conference in 20 minutes, Coach G responded, "What I realized in the last 20 mins is that if I knew that my heart was someplace else in what I wanted to do, I don't think it would be fair to the [Arizona] organization if I stayed."

As for the rest of the colleges involved, Coach Ed is making his way into this league with SEC's southern hospitality as he'll lead the Running Rebels of Ole Miss. Ed comments in his phone interview, "I plan to have a statue 10 times bigger than Bobby Bowden. I'm bigger than Bobby Bowden. F*ck Bobby Bowden."
Coach silverRonin will be rolling the die and taking UNLV to their first college football Championship, ever. "These are good kids with talent. As long as I keep off the strip clubs and away from the casinos, we'll have a shot."
Lastly, Coach Bigs returns from a 3 year hiatus and is in closed door conversation with colleges from different conferences. The rumor mill has him associated to San Diego State University as Mexican landscapers admit to seeing him home shopping around the San Diego area. He was not available for interview, but the nation will know soon enough who he'll sign with considering the season starts in a week.
